Birthday Elephant

the requester asked for a painting for her mother's birthday. AEAS are her initials. i felt a little weird about putting 2008 on the painting because now it seems more like a greeting card than a timeless piece of artwork. i don't really understand why she'd want that on there. or why rappers like to say the current year in their songs.

Two Shows. One failed and One Old.

i've now reached the end of my music series and i'd like to mention that i did get accepted to that record themed gallery show. yay! i'd also like to mention that i got the day wrong and missed my own opening. not yay! what a dumb artist. but in my defense, the invite had the date correct but the day of the week was wrong. so the above picture is the only documentation i have of the series together. i supposedly was going to have them displayed in the gallery in a crate like that and give them away at the opening. i have no idea if they ended up being given away or not. the show juror hasn't emailed me back yet.

also, i've been putting off posting about another show from a while ago. this one happened successfully with me in attendance. here are pictures of my art getting freed:

Eighth Note

this looks like something that belongs on the music section of my website.

Pedal

my piano teacher told me this always looked like a drawing of a dog to her.

D.S. al Coda

Half the time this symbol is preceded by the abbreviation "D.S. al". It tells the musician to go back in the music until they see this symbol and repeat from there.

G Clef

my second G clef. the first one was white and more cartoony.

Noncommercial Reproductions

a guy just emailed me saying he used my paintings to decorate his kid's nursery. quite cute :) google image search has decided to turn my free paintings into free jpegs too.

F Clef

Alla Breve

i couldn't paint common time because it would just look like a c and not something used in music notation.

Half Note Quarter Note

forgot to post yesterday. i've been keeping busy at work so i guess i forgot to distract myself with blogging. yes, i post to my blog while i'm at work. don't tell my boss!

i see this one as a middle C but i guess it could be any note below any staff. or maybe it's upside down and actually above the staff.

this guy gets two beats.

Natural

if this shape were a real object i could hold in my hands, it looks like it would be really sharp and flat. that's funny because a natural note is neither flat nor sharp.

1/4 Rest

i've seen these all my life in sheet music but if you asked me to draw one from memory i'd probably screw it up.

Sharp

this painting is the beginning of a series i'm doing of music notation characters. these are still a part of the paintings for the record themed art show. i really like seeing the little symbols blown up.

Cassette

now this is a symbol of old school. when are CDs going to be retro?

Speaker

i almost feel like this should be a diptych with another one facing the other direction on the right.

Drum Set

drums are a cool instrument. there's no such thing as an uncool drummer.

Headphones

and again i've painted several headphones before but i chose to paint another one because it fits so well with the record themed art show. i try to change it up most of the time though. i went with a front view instead of side like in the past.

Turntable......NUMBER 600!

this post marks my 600th painting! wow. 600 people around the world have my art.

although i've painted four before this, i just had to do another turntable for this record themed art show.

Metronome, Mic 3 and 4

i have no idea why i forgot to post both days this weekend. really. it just completely slipped my mind that i have a blog to which i post once a day. so here's a triple packed post for monday. (side note: i feel like the word trippple should have three P's in it.)

and my fourth microphone. this one is quite generic.

this is the third microphone i've painted. i wanted to do a retro one this time.

i have one of these on my piano. i can't remember a time when i actually used it. but i like having it.

Another Skull Tattoo

another guy got my skull painting tattooed upon himself. forever. cool! google image search is so helpful. last time it was on a guy's knuckle. this guy went with the classic arm placement. i'll be sending this guy a painting too because he went though all that pain for art.

iPod

the next series i'm posting (about 25 paintings) is for a juried show to which i am submitting. the requirements are that the artwork must be record sized or smaller and must fit into a milk crate. that is too perfect for me to pass that up. i've been told that my paintings remind people of records and they fit into record frames. so i'm going to submit a bunch of paintings in a milk crate for gallery viewers to flip through and take if they like. i hope i get accepted! so yeah, the next group of paintings will all be music themed to fit with the show.

first is an ipod. i figured i had to do this cultural icon some time. i'm just surprised it was voluntary and not a request. of course its going to be obsolete in a few moments. this will look like a cave drawing next year when new technology has surpassed it.

%

the final painting in my expletive series. i realized after posting them that they the requester asked for them in the order they are on a keyboard....!@#$%. that's either clever or lazy. i like it either way.

@

i'm fond of at signs for no particular reason. i guess maybe its because my first name begins with an "a". there's actually kind of an at sign hidden in my logo.
