Jungle Animals Mural
sorry, still no daily paintings yet but i do have a freelance project to post. this is a design for a mural that's going in a little boy's room. his whole room is going to be jungle themed and his parents were searching online for jungle animal images when they found my site. they liked my giraffe and wanted me to design a scene with him, a lion and a monkey. i did my best to make the lion not look hungry and the other two not look delicious. the parents are going to project the image on the boy's wall to paint it. hopefully they'll send me pictures of the finished mural!

ISSUE!
i order the canvases for my free paintings in bulk about 100 at a time from an art store near me. two weeks ago i called to place my order (which i do every 100 days or so). the store of course never has that many on hand and has to order them from the main warehouse. this time, the main warehouse didn't have that many canvases either! they said it was no problem though because they just had to put in an order from what i'm guessing is an even larger and more main-y warehouse and the canvases would be in in about a week. as you can probably guess, because i'm writing a post about it, the canvases are not in yet. i guess i'll be taking a (hopefully very) short break from my one square foot of art a day until i have art-ing supplies again! sorry! i hope i don't lose the tens of followers i have on google reader.

Giraffe Traded for a Camera
this was requested by a guy who's girlfriend's nickname was "giraffe". notice i said "was". by the time i emailed him to tell him that his painting was done and that i was going to mail it to him, she had broken up with him. though art is supposed to evoke emotion, a constant reminder of a breakup hanging on the wall isn't ideal. so i offered to let him choose from the unclaimed paintings. i have a bunch that didn't get responses when i emailed the requesters to tell them their paintings were done. he was happy to take a camera instead of the breakup tribute.

Unnecessary Repaint
i painted my fourth rocket in a retro style because it was a request from a mom for a boy that likes "rockets and all things galactic, cool and retro". then one of my friends was visiting from out of town and saw the painting before i told the requester about it. he liked it a lot so i let him have it. then i painted this new retro rocket for the boy. i got no response when i emailed the mom a photo and told her it was done. i guess i didn't need to paint another one.

My Mailman's Family Members
when you mail one painting a day, you get to know the people at the post office. this painting is for one of those people. he asked me to make the girl smiling. i really like the pained face she's giving in the photo, though.

A Painting Based on Someone Else's Creation
according to wikipedia, "Flower Fairies are tiny creatures (the biggest is only 20cm tall) that live in the bottom of gardens, the middle of grassy meadows, and on the edge of distant marshes. Wherever and whenever a seed sprouts, a Flower Fairy baby is born. Each Flower Fairy lives and sleeps in their chosen flower, plant or tree, and as this grows the fairy grows too. Each and every Flower Fairy is in charge of looking after their flower or plant; keeping it strong and healthy by making sure it has plenty of sunshine and water to drink, sweeping away dead leaves, and polishing flowers and stems."

A Story About a Rugby Ball
a few days ago i posted a rugby ball. while i was researching what they looked like, i came across modern ones that were white with colorful graphics and vintage ones that look more like american footballs. i decided to go with the vintage look but i really doubted my choice. so when i emailed the requester a picture of the finished painting, i asked if a modern one would be better. the answer was yes so i repainted over the vintage version. the requester was happy and i posted a recount of the occurrence on my blog.

Popular Breed
this is my fourth irish terrier (though in my gallery it's actually listed as "irish terrier 3" because the first one was titled "king irish terrier"). i do believe this is the breed i've painted the most. second place is the jack russell terrier at two.

Nicole....and Nicole and Ryan
this girl requested a painting of herself.
a few requests ago i got one of a guy requesting a painting of himself. i've never had that type of request before and i thought it was weird that i received such similar requests so close to each other. thinking about what i wanted to post to describe this girl's painting went like this:
i figured i'll mention that this girl is just like the guy a few paintings before that requested a painting of himself.
i noticed that in both their photos, they did the very facebook-like maneuver of cutting out the person they're next to even though it's clear there was someone else in the photo. i figured i'd mention it was funny they both did that.
i decided it would be even funnier if i put the girl's picture next to the guy's because they cut out someone on the opposite sides of each other. i would then joke about how compatible they'd be because they must think alike.
i realized the photos match up and this is a couple that sent in their requests together.
wow. yeah. it took me that long to come to that realization. i stared at both of their photos and painted both of their faces and still didn't get it until now.
neither of them mentioned each other in their request emails. nor did they mention each other when i emailed them to tell them that their paintings were finished. i wonder if they're still together. maybe they didn't even make these requests together! maybe they're just kind of friends that happened to have the same idea and executed it with the same photo!! i doubt it.

What Color?!
this is the least helpful can of spray paint ever. the can says it will be grey and the lid says it will be red. if i had to pick the paint color i would choose from one of those two. my third guess would be a muted maroon that would be created combining the red and grey. not black! black was nowhere near my list of possible color options for this can of spray paint. what was the requester thinking?

Lots of Running and Two Paintings
sorry i didn't post yesterday, i was busy running 26.2 miles. yep, i ran the pittsburgh marathon and here's proof:
they don't just give those finisher medals to anyone. they give them to finishers. which i am. yay!
a portrait commissioned by the subject [patron pictured below]. of course "commission" has payment in it's definition so that's probably the wrong word.
this reminds me of a song from the musical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. i'm just going to post all the lyrics cause they're so perfect.
Dress up a monkey in Armani,
He may seem precocious and cute.
Despite all that primpin',
You still got a chimp in a suit.
Teach him the second
Verse of "Swanee"
And most of "Moon River" to boot.
Sure people will gape
But you still got an ape in a suit.
Shprizt him 'til wet
With the Eau de Toilette
And you're still gonna get
A stench.
Dampen him well
In a quart of Chanel,
It won't cover the smell-
I should know, I'm French!
Take him to see Don Giovanni,
Show him Cezanne's lovely fruit,
Teach him to cook
From Escoffier's book,
He's still a gorrila en croute-
You still got a chimp in a suit.
So you've shaved off his fur,
Decked him out in couture
And endowed him with pure Savior Fare-
You dressed him up fancy
And trained him to dance,
He remains a chimpan-cee,
He's not Fred Astaire!
Give him a dandy little topper,
Tie on a natty cravat
Buy him a castle,
He'll still be an asshole
And nothing you do will change that-
He's still just a stinky little minkey
In a dinky little suit
And a cheap little hat!

No, This Is Not a Photograph
a photorealistic painting of what it's like under the sea. really. that's precisely what it looks like.
